THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 6
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 6
Doctor Johnathan Rhoades, medical doctor, and licensed psychiatrist. A man who DARES to look PAST the obvious, and discover what is at the HEART, of patients conditions.
The following is case-file number 6, of Doctor Rhoades highly unusual approach to treatment, of mental disorders.
"In what is becoming an increasingly enlarging part, of my private practice, I have been enlisted to provide aid to some museum workers.
From the data, which I have been provided, to date, it would seem that a local museum had acquired a relic, of antiquity. A piece which, if history were correct, should have been pilferred, by the Spanish, maybe 500 years before.
The museums director is becoming concerned over the fact that workers, who were, normally, most effective, at their jobs, were avoiding going near anything to do with the discovery. The director states that they believe that the workers fear some curse, about some "fearful monster", which is said to "rise", if the artifact is disturbed.
The museum director feels that, if **I** speak, to the workers, reminding the workers that fairy tales are for children, that the hope is that the museum can open the exhibit, on schedule.
I have agreed to consult, if for no other reason than to show the workers that "curses", and other "superstition", are nothing more than illusions, created by the subjects minds.
I can only think, however, that, the night before I began this work, that I must have had the case "on my brain", since, during sleep, I had a very vivid "dream", about an ancient culture.
A culture which, if history books are to be believed, sacrificed virgins, on a regular basis, to one, of several, gods.
(Note: In my own study, of history, even though my primary focus was medicine, I was astounded by how many cultures have been accused of HUMAN sacrifice, based, solely, upon the findings, of traces, of human blood, on altar stones. This "finding", supposedly, "backed" by tales, of virgin sacrifices.
Since I, for one, admit to not being old enough, to have been present, at the sacrifices, I question the authors, of such manuscripts, for making conclusions, based upon events which they did NOT, PERSONALLY, witness.)
Still, I have been enlisted, to perform a basic service, and I have agreed to provide this.
I just could not get the dream out of my mind.
The priest, and the guards, dressed, in ceremonial robes, wearing masks, of gold, were in attendance, at a ceremony, where an adult male was being brought to the altar.
In what sounded, to me, like a combination of a prayer, and a final judgement, the man was strapped down, to the altar, just as modern people are strapped down, for execution.
With two, other, figures placing steaming bowls, of something, on each side of the males head, I got the impression that, when the dagger penetrated flesh, and the blood began to flow, that this was not to "appease" a god.
This was more like an execution, for a capital crime.
When the body was chopped up, and the parts, dumped into a hole, I thought the man must have been a terrible criminal, to be denied proper burial.
While, over proceeding centuries, the body parts would produce teeth-marks, and a suspicion of Cannibalism, in my dream, I witnessed as animals dug their way into the grave, and consumed the remains.
It was then that the reason, for the dream, became clear, to me. It was because the executed man had tried to STEAL a relic. Something which, to this culture, was even more valuable than gold. It was like it was the root of their culture. A "root", which members would FIGHT, to the death, to protect.
While, even in the vision, I stayed well to the rear, in order to observe, I found that locals were more than willing to give, generously, for the supposed "protection" of whatever the relic was offering.
While I awoke, the following morning, feeling like I had not slept, at all, the visions remained with me. This is what lead me to believe that, perhaps, museum workers were having the same dream. If they were, this would explain A LOT of things.
Best to be careful, though. Never try to "contaminate" the evidence.
After a larger-than-usual breakfast, I would gather my equipment, and prepare to begin my work.
While "Phase One" was, normally, the most difficult part. (The part about encouraging people to "open up", to me) This task was made even more difficult when, upon my arrival, the following happpened.
First of all, the museum director not only met me, at the door, but made a point of informing the receptionist of WHO, and WHAT, I was.
Then, the director guided me into his office, where he told me how much TIME I had, for my inquiry. (It seems the director was determined to open the exhibit, on schedule, even if he had to replace his entire staff)
When I noticed that the director opened his "welcome" with the relics transport, to the United States, instead of at its point of origin, I noticed that, for the final leg, of the journey, the director was willing to provide a surprising amount, of detail, regarding the final passage.
That, and the totally-secure method, by which the relic came to rest in the museum.
It was not until the man told me "You have seventy-two hours to sort this thing out. If you have no conclusion, by that time, I will be forced to use cruder methods of persuasion, on the staff."
When I reminded the director "Mental abberations are not like cuts, or broken bones. You cant just slap a band-aid, on the mind, and call it "healed"." The director would stand, firm, saying "Seventy-two hours. Do we understand one another?"
By the time I departed the directors office, to begin trying to meet with the staff, I KNEW that the staff had been "warned", about me. This was obvious, by the fact that almost none of the staff were speaking English.
And, NO, it is NOT unusual for archeologists, and even museums, to hire "local" talent, to move exhibits about. In fact, some governments prefer having some "patriots" with their relics, while the relics are out of native lands.
For me, the question was "How do I win these peoples trust, when they KNOW that I am here, presumably, to "question" them"?
I was just thankful when their, female, foreman, came forward, and greeted me. As she lead me to her office space, the woman asked "What have you been told, so far?"
When I told her "Only that a relic has been loaned, to the museum, and that workers fear to be around the relic. Beyond that, I have no idea even what the relic looks like."
The foreman would correct my earlier information, saying "The relic, you speak of, is NOT "on-loan", to the museum, from my country. It was purchased, via the black market, and smuggled out of my home-land."
I thought "No wonder the director was so specific ONLY about the trip to the United States."
When I asked "If the relic was, illegally, removed, from your nation, why does your government not file a protest?"
The foreman would say "You, really, dont know, do you." When I would ask "About what?" The foreman would say "The most recent protest, filed by my government, and which is, currently, being "investigated", by your government, originated in the 1950's. Your, American, government is only efficient, when the rich, and powerful, want it to be."
When I would ask "In that case, can you fill me in on WHERE the relic originated, and what it was used for?" The foreman would say "We must be both careful, and respectful, of such things. While the gods might be ancient, their powers have survived, over the millenia."
When I would suggest "In other words, if we are not cautious, then the descendants, of the priests, will exact a penalty, upon us."
The foreman would suggest "I would not speak, so lightly, of such matters. While there are cult members, willing to do the gods bidding, it is wisest not to anger the gods, in the first place."
When I would say "Fair enough. Now, what can you tell me, about the history, of the relic?"
The fore-(woman) would say "Among my people, there are stories. Stories, of a diety, coming from the stars, in a "flaming chariot". The diety blessed my people with the knowledge of farming, water-conservation, and population control. It is said that the diety, also, brought forth the laws, which my people have followed, since the "beginning time".
When I would suggest "It sounds much like the Bible, with its "In the Beginning..." line."
The woman would say "No one is certain of which version came, first. This, since your Bible does not list precise dates, and the missionarries destroyed most of our history, for reasons I, still, do not believe in."
When I would ask "Did your people keep accurate records, of the passage of time?" The woman would say "If your mean like the modern calendar, then no. My people had our own calendars, for many millenia. This is why I say that no one is certain of which text came first."
When I would move on, asking "How does this relic fit into all of this?" The woman would say "When worn by the "chosen", and used, with respect, the relic is said to give its wearer the ability to view time. Past, present, and future. That, and the ability to heal. If you want to go full-tilt, into history, some stories claim that the relic gives the wearer instant knowledge, of any language, which is spoken, about them."
When I would suggest "It sounds like even you do not believe, to a great degree." The woman would say "I am a woman, of science. If you want me to believe in something, I say "Show me the goods"."
I would say "WISE precaution. You never know WHO might try to make people believe in fairy tales." The woman would say "Even worse. We know not how FAR such believers would go, in trying to "honor the gods"."
When I would ask "May I see the relic?", the woman would say "Normally, such requests would be denied, however, since you are here to aid, and assist, I see no reason to deny your request."
I, really, dont know what I was prepared to see. Probably something golden. Maybe, encrusted with jewels. Maybe, something worth enough money, to buy New York City, or Washington D.C., with the proceeds.
What I was presented with was none of these.
While the relic was PAINTED, to resemble bone (maybe human bone), even I, a medical doctor, could tell that the white substance was not human bone. My best guess would be ivory, painted to resemble bone.
Another, odd, fact, of the relic, was the amount of blue color, which was used in decorating the piece.
I would consider this odd, since the color, blue, was not much in abundance, in the relics home-land. The relic MUST have been important, for locals to spend the money, for blue paint.
As I observed the piece, with my own eyes, I cant explain what happened, but I felt myself "lifting", for lack of a better word, out of this world.
Was it just my imagination, or did I, actually, feel like I was transiting, to a point, in the past?
During what I will only describe as a vision, I found myself attending another ceremony. This one, full of joy, and celebration.
The relic was being worshipped for what I took to be a bountiful harvest.
There were camp-fires, chanting, eating, drinking, and plenty of dancing. I just wished I understood the language of the locals.
It was not until the moment, when the warrior, who was holding the relic up, high, turned, and pointed at ME, that I heard the fore-womans voice asking "Doctor, are you alright?"
First, it was only a whisper, then it became more urgent. When I felt like I was being pulled at, I felt as though I was rushing (not travelling, comfortably), rushing back toward the present.
"Falling" back into my body felt like I had just fallen from 10,000 feet.
When the woman asked "Doctor, are you feeling alright?" All I could think of, to say was to ask "How OLD did you say that relic was?"
The woman would say "No one, really, knows. Some say it dates to the 1300's. Others say it dates to the beginning, of recorded time. Who is to say which is right?"
While it would take Doctor Rhoades a few hours, to, fully, recover, from his experience, he found himself wondering how a people could worship a piece of ivory. Then, Doctor Rhoades "back-pedalled", himself, when he remembered how Christians worship wooden crosses, for their Christian symbolism.
If the Christians could worship wood, then WHY could not other people worship other materials?
While the relic had been returned to its secure case, Doctor Rhoades wondered if what he was feeling was real. WAS the relic "calling" to him "Return me to my people", or was it just my imagination?
That night, while working on his notes, in a work-room, Doctor Rhoades heard a noise, in the hall. Since the female fore-man had informed the doctor that workers had departed, for the evening, Doctor Rhoades THOUGHT that he should be alone, in this section, of the museum.
The female fore-man had said that she was planning to work, in the exhibit area (in case the doctor needed her), while the director would be pulling another, late, night, TRYING to bring the exhibits opening back on schedule.
The man seemed so passionate, about opening the exhibit, on schedule. Somehow, Doctor Rhoades wondered WHY this was.
It was not until Doctor Rhoades heard another sound, and words he did not recognize, that he closed his briefcase, then went for a look.
While a glance, in one direction, showed nothing out of the ordinary. Just shelves of antiquities. A glance, in the opposite direction, and Doctor Rhoades doubted his own vision.
At the far end, of the hall, were a group, of men, muscular for sure, and wearing robes, like the ancients wore.
While, around their collars, the men wore gold jewelry, as well as golden, face, masks, Doctor Rhoades noticed that very LITTLE, of the mens costumes was made of gold.
Most, of their costumes, were made of brightly colored fabric.
Then, as if out of nowhere, came a mist, which flowed, at the mens feet, then surrounded them, like a fog.
When the fog withdrew, the men were gone.
Now, being a man of science, Doctor Rhoades first impulse, which he followed, was to rush to the end of the corridor, and find out if the "fog" had been nothing more than a smoke machine.
When Doctor Rhoades reached the corner, and began searching the area, looking for clues, it was not long before his thoughts were distracted, by a female scream.
When Doctor Rhoades rushed to find out who was screaming, and why, he found the female fore-man pointing into the directors office. When Doctor Rhoades entered the office, he could not believe what he saw.
The museum director had not only been killed. The man had been killed, just as the man, in the vision had been executed.
Now, the question was "HOW did the criminals enter the building?", do their "business", then escape, all without anyone noticing?
After Doctor Rhoades notified the police, of the crime, he questioned the woman, asking "What made you come to his office, at this time?"
When the woman would say "I was following them."(and described the same, robed, figures, which Doctor Rhoades had witnessed), then she would add "I had no idea they had done this. I mean, what is the purpose? Why sacrifice him? Why not just shoot, or poison, him?"
By the time the police arrived, Doctor Rhoades seemed certain of one thing. The people, who had committed this crime WANTED their actions to be known. A "warning", if you will, of what would happen, to anyone else, who might violate sacred relics.
It would seem that the police became convinced, rather quickly, that this was an "inside job". All based upon the flimsy "evidence" that the security system had not been triggered.
How else could the criminals have entered, and departed, the building, without making any noise?
What first Doctor Rhoades, then the medical examiner, wanted to know was "Since the museum director had been executed, sacrifice-style, then WHERE was all the blood?"
From the way the body was cut open, Doctor Rhoades would have expected blood all over the furniture. That, and covering the desk. That is, IF the director had been murdered, in this office.
When Doctor Rhoades would talk to the fore-woman, after she tried to answer the police questions, asking how, if the man was killed, in his own office, that the office was not covered in blood.
The woman would explain "In my country, there are many rituals, involving death. Some, you are aware of. Others, we do not share, with "outsiders".
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How can a body be drained, of its blood, without any spillage, outside of an operating room?"
The woman would say "There is a practice. Normally, we are forbidden to speak, openly, of it. It is the process, of collecting the blood, of the dead, before it loses the soul."
When Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would ask "Does the process include placing bowls on either side, of the victims head?"
The woman would caution "IN that, there are two rituals. One, for criminals. One for the honored deceased."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "In which process is the victim strapped down, by guards?" The woman would say "That is the ritual, for criminals."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "The other one?" The woman would say "According to my peoples beliefs, while the criminal version is designed to bind the soul, to its resting place, so that it can perform no further evil, in ANY form, the other version is for the honored dead. Their blood is placed in special bowls, where offerings may be placed. In this way, the soul is freed, more rapidly, to enjoy eternity."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How does one tell the difference between the ceremonies?" The woman would say "In honored death, there is festivity, food, drink, celebration. In short, a rememberance of those who have passed, with gladness."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "The alternative?" The woman would say "The prisoner is DRAGGED to the altar, gassed into submission, then sacrificed, to the gods. In this version, there is NO celebration. All is silent, as the order is carried out."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Which version would you say the director was party to?" The woman would say "I would say that he was tried, convicted, and executed."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How?, WHERE? By WHOM? How did they get past the security system?" All the woman would say was "The ancients have their ways. We do not question them. We respect them."
Doctor Rhoades just hoped the woman understood that, unless, and until, another suspect could be captured, that the psychiatrist, and the fore-woman, were not the prime suspects. They were the ONLY suspects.
The only "good" news, to come out of the next couple of days was that, with the death, of the museum director, the exhibit grand opening was postponed, until the police investigation was concluded.
This was good news, since this provided Doctor Rhoades the time that he needed, to speak with the museum staff. Doctor Rhoades, also, knew that he had the fore-woman to thank, for his acceptance, among the workers. (It seems that she convinced the workers that the doctor was NOT questioning, and cross-examining. He just wanted more information, on what the staff was working on).
As a result, while the police did their work, Doctor Rhoades proceeded with discovering the reason WHY the workers feared the new exhibit.
What the doctor could not "shake", however, were his own "visions". Visions which he, now, wondered were distant past, present, or the future.
Thanks to the visions, however, the doctor KNEW when workers were speaking the truth.
When no one seemed to KNOW, but everyone WANTED to know, was HOW the criminals got into the museum, committed their crime, and escaped, all without setting off any alarms.
When one worker mentioned "Maybe, they used the "passe de time", another worker said "On your knee's, and beg forgiveness, for such talk."
When Doctor Rhoades asked "Before he does this, may I ask WHAT the "passe de time" is?"
The fore-woman would say "It is another, of our legends." When Doctor Rhoades would say "Go on." The woman would say "There are legends, that the most knowledgable, of the high priests, could open portals, in time, and space. IF the legends are true, it would be possible for a high priest to open a portal, to any location, bypass any security system, and, if you, really, want to hear a good one, the legend says that the high priest could stop time, then take their time, performing rituals."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "You continue to mention the HIGH priests. Why do you keep saying HIGH? Are there different levels of priests, in your land?"
The woman would say "Ofcourse. The lowest level, of priest, tends the crops, and advises farmers on what to plant, and when. The next level, are the healers. The priests, who heal the sick, and injured. After that, comes the level, which you Americans call "ministers", "priests", "Rabbi's", and so on. These are the priests who conduct mass.
The HIGH priests are the final level. The high priests are those, who have proven themselves worthy of the church. They are taught things which your science says is impossible. Talents, which our people have been practicing, in secret, for centuries."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Like walking through walls? Altering time, to allow for an execution?" The woman would say "ONLY in the most EXTREME circumstances. To flaunt such power would be to bring the wrath, of the gods upon the people."
What neither Doctor Rhoades, nor the woman, could account for was the fact that, that very night, after their discussion, the relic vanished, from its high security case.
The very next night, after the police finished their work, and the woman, and Doctor Rhoades, were trying to figure out more, of the relic's history, an un-explained fog rolled in, and filled part of the room.
When Doctor Rhoades would whisper "The "passe de time"? A male figure would step out of the mist, speaking in the tongue, of the South Americans. The woman would translate, for the doctor.
"Yes, this is a time passage. This is how we know of your time, and civilization. Our only desire is to recover what was stolen, from our people, and to "educate" those, who would steal from us."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Why have you not shared this amazing ability, with the rest of the world?" The woman would translate as the lead male, of what turned out to be a five-man group, would say "At one time, in the distant past, when ALL men were brothers, the knowledge was part, of everyones "education".
Over time, as people became greedy, for power, an attempt was made, to prevent the power-hungry from gaining the "ABILITIES of the mind". Success was mixed, as it was not possible to tell who would use the abilities, for evil.
This is why, in the end, the decision was made. The "education" would be kept only for those who PROVED themselves worthy, in the eyes of the gods."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Would it be possible for mankind to, one-day, have the powers returned?" The woman would translate "Only to the worthy. Only to those, who will not abuse the abilities. For those people, awareness is possible, even now. For those, who wish to (bully) others, the abilities will be denied."
The woman would add "Something like "He, who lives by the sword, shall perish by the sword.""
When Doctor Rhoades, telepathically, projected "I wish I knew more, about how this is accomplished", it seems that one, of the robed figures, understood the meaning, of the request. This is when, in his "third eye", Doctor Rhoades would be presented with a complex, mathematical, formula.
After this, however, the woman translated some more, as the warriors said "Be warned. Such sacriledge will not be so easily dealt with, in the future. Now, we return to our lands."
As if the fog machine had been switched on, again, the fog surrounded the warriors, who seemed to vanish, right before our eyes.
The next day, when Doctor Rhoades would write down the contents, of his vision, take this to the local university, and present it to a collegue, the professors first question was "When did you give up being a "head shrink", for becoming a Quantum Engineer?"
When Doctor Rhoades would say "I didn't. I just want to know what that means." Thee professor would say "Either you have a very over-active imagination, or you have made a scientific break-through".
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What does it matter. All I want to know is "WHAT doees it say?" The professor, a leader, in the field of Quantum Theory, would say "Most of this is far beyond even me. What I can tell you is that this seems to be a formula, for travelling across both time, and space."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "For what SIZE of craft?" The professor would say "It is not for ships. This theory is more like the transporter beam, from Star Trek. Just covering a longer distance." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Anything, further, you can tell me?" The professor would say "I will need a few weeks. I need to contact some people."
Before departing, Doctor Rhoades would ask "Just keep me informed, okay?" Seeing the professor engulfed, in his work, Doctor Rhoades would not wait for a reply.
Back at the museum, Doctor Rhoades noticed that museum staff seemed much more at-ease, now that the relic was missing. Staff were even more willing to share stories, from native villages, about the "power" of the relic.
Doctor Rhoades did not know why, however, thee more he thought, about the relic, the easier it was to "vision" the relic, in his "third eye". The doctor could SEE the relic, back on its pedestal, guarded by the ancients. He knew the relic was safe, for the time being.
What Doctor Rhoades never expected was what happened, next.
While reviewing his case notes, the doctor received an e-mail, with a video attachment. The subject line was "Next time, this COULD be you".
The accompanying video showed what looked like the professors workshop, fully ablaze. The video voice was heard saying "While working late, Professor **** seems to have set his laboratory ablaze. Source, and reason, remain a mystery. More details, as they become available."
This was followed by the typed text:
We KNOW what you gave the professor. It is too dangerous to be out, in the world. Let this be a warning. We KNOW who you are, Doctor Johnathan Rhoades. Psychiatrist. Imagine how easily YOU could go from being doctor, to being "patient".
When Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would try to respond, to the message, asking "Who is this?" The good old internet gave its normal "No such address." response.
Doctor Rhoades next surprise would come when he found out that the work VISA's, which museum staff had, for working on the exhibit, not only came to an end, but with such speed that the people, barely, had time to pack, before they would be declared "hostile aliens".
This left Doctor Rhoades to wonder. WHO could be so determined to keep scientific knowledge OUT of the public domain, that they would go to such lengths, to silence all research? For that matter, WHY bother trying to keep something, from humanity? Something which only a handful of people could understand. WHAT was so dangerous?
Then, Doctor Rhoades heard the High Priests words, in his own head, speaking English, as the priest said "Given time, you WILL understand."
Doctor Rhoades would be left to wonder "WHY had a psychiatrist being given a mathematical equation?"
Doctor Rhoades would, just, be closing this case file, when a friend contacted him.
"I need your help, with my children." When Doctor Rhoades would say "I have told you, before, there is nothing that medical science can do, if a person chooses to believe in aliens. Just so long as your young people do not disregard their health, for their beliefs, you just need to let them believe."
It would not be until the friend would say "Johnathan, this is SERIOUS". When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How serious?" His friend would say "Not over the phone. How soon can you visit?"
Doctor Rhoades would say "I can be there, tomorrow, if need be. Just let me wrap up, here." His friend would say "See you soon."
Doctor Rhoades would be left to wonder what could be so serious, yet it could not be addressed, over the phone?

THE NEW SIXTH SENSE #5
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 5
While my fifth case, in private practice, was intended to be a case involving Dimentia, what I had no idea of, at the time, was just how complex the contents, of the case, would become.
According to the patients file, the man was suffering from the most severe case, of Dimentia, which has been recorded, to this date.
If the report is accurate, it would seem that, after 25 years of marriage, something had happened, which caused the man to, suddenly, believe that his own wife was trying to kill the man, via poisoning his food.
Now, while it IS known, that SOME, healthy, men have such belief, most of the time, this can be attributed to a spouse, seeming to lose romantic interest.
In other cases, it has been found that wives MAY attempt to kill husbands, in order to collect on life insurance policies.
With the proceeds, these women HOPE to make a "fresh start", once final expenses have been paid off.
While there are other possibilities, as well, it seems that I am being called, on this case, since the patient seems determined to prove that his entire family is trying to kill him. The patient seems determined the to prove this point, by tearing down the family home. (Thus eliminating the "secret panels", which the patient feels his family are using, in their "scheme")
Since the patient has applied for a demolition permit, local doctors want an external, psychiatric evaluation, prior to allowing the town to approve the demolition permit.
In order to perform such a proper, psychiatric, evaluation, I have assembled the latest, in patient review techniques.
While my collegues may, also, believe that **I** am a "mental case", I retain the belief that the "best medicine" is that which brings the patient best results, under the most normal circumstances.
This, even as I remain up-to-date, on the latest, official, practices.
While enroute, to observe this patient, my trip would be "diverted", by un-expected events.
Events, which only began when two, of the four, of my flights engines, suddenly shut down.
Since the remaining engines just did not have enough power, to keep the plane airborne, an emergency landing was called for. This, just outside the small town of Sunnyland.
Once the plane made a successful landing, passengers would be asked to wait, inside the terminal building, while workers attempted to re-start engines.
Now, while **I** am a trained docctor, and psychiatrist, and, therefore, TRAINED to know WHEN to listen in, on conversations, what I was hearing bordered on fantastic.
According to atleast two, elderly, women, who were waiting for rides, my flight was neither the first, nor fifth, nor tenth, to suffer flight problems.
As one woman said "If anymore planes come down, around here, I bet they close our airport, and move (re-route) flights, all the way to Creve Coure."
When the other woman would ask "How will I keep in touch, with my grand-children, if they do that?"
It was then that I heard a mans voice say "What they need to do is DEAL with that HOUSE."
When an elderly woman would say "What nonsense. HOW can a HOUSE bring down airplanes?"
The male was about to say something when the intercom came to life, announcing "All passengers, of flight****. Due to technical difficulties, beyond our control, flight will be delayed."
Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would have been suspiciuous of the fact that, right after this announcement, a group, of cab drivers, entered the terminal, offering rides, to local motels.
That is, until Doctor Rhoades entered a cab, only to have the driver ask "Your name, sir?" When Johnathan Rhoades would ask "Why do you ask?" The driver would say "Standard thing. When planes come down, we log the passengers names, and flight numbers. This way, when planes are fixed, we pick you up, and you make your flight."
When Johnathan Rhoades would say "Quite efficient, and professional."
When the driver would say "Now, sir, your name?" Johnathan Rhoades didnt think it mattered, but he gave his title as "Doctor Johnathan Rhoades. Flight ****. Enroute to visit a patient."
When the driver would ask "An M.D., huh?" Doctor Rhoades would say "A psychiatrist, to be precise. I have my M.D., but my field is the mind, not the body."
The way the driver would say "Interesting" made Doctor Rhoades suspicious, even before the cab entered the motel parking lot.
While the cab driver assisted the doctor, with his bags, Doctor Rhoades original plan, which was to, further, review the "dimented" patients psychiatric records, for either health, or prescription, reasons, for behavior, this plan did not last, for long.
In fact, Johnathan Rhoades was just starting to relax, with the patients file, when lights, at the motel window were followed by a knock, at the doctors door.
When Johnathan Rhoades opened the rooms door, to see a deputy sheriff, standing before him, Doctor Rhoades was about to ask "Whats going on?", yet decided to allow the deputy to take the lead.
When the deputy would ask "Doctor Rhoades?" Johnathan would agree, hoping that he was NOT being called for something like child-birth.
It was when the deputy would ask "Doctor Johnathan Rhoades. Psychiatrist. Am I correct?" This is when Doctor Rhoades would relax. This was not an M.D. call.
When Johnathan would say "Correct. What may I do for you?" The deputy would ask "Would you grab your coat, and accompany me, please?"
While Johnathan was shocked to hear the deputy ASK for the doctors assistance (Note: The time, when doctors KNOW something is serious is when law enforcement does not ASK. They TELL).
After Johnathan Rhoades would gather his coat, and his portable gear, wondering where the police were taking him,
It would be on the way OUT of town, when the deputy would say "Doctor Rhoades, understand. This is completely OFF the record." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "May I ask why?" The deputy would say "First of all, I am not taking you to the hospital and its psych ward. Second, since this unit is eqipped with a transponder, you are in no danger, if anything happens. Help can reach you within an hour."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Deputy, WHY are you telling ME all of this?"
The deputy would say "For the following reasons: Number One. There are, un-fortunately, those persons, who purchase police uniforms, either for the purpose of robbing tourists, or for kidnapping, and raping, women.
Number Two: The location I am taking you to is outside town. I am doing this because I do not believe, as others may, that the problem is INSIDE town."
Doctor Rhoades would add "Number Three: IF you are WRONG, you dont want any record, of your mistake. If we DONT find what you are looking for, you will pay, to replace the gas you are using, and request that I never mention the subject."
The deputy would say "So, we understand one another, doctor."
Doctor Rhoades understood the deputies reasons, for concern, when the two arrived at the subject location.
While the house was of the classic, Victorian, style, and did not APPEAR "menacing", in any way, as Doctor Rhoades exited the squad car, a series, of visions, filled his mind.
WAS he visioning the house, being built? WAS he visioning a couple, moving in? WAS he visioning young girls, practicing a dance, in front of the house?
As Doctor Rhoades closed his eyes, trying to sort out the visions, another, far less tranquill, vision, came to the doctor. The vision, of a man, in colonial clothing, and wearing what appeared to be a golden (crucifix)?
This lead Doctor Rhoades to wonder WHEN crucifixes had been made of gold?
In the vision, Doctor Rhoades could, clearly, hear the man saying "Spawn of Satan. Ye shall die, by the cleansing fire, of the Almighty God. Before the cleansing begins, have you any confessions to empart?"
It was at this point, when, in the present, the deputy touched the doctor, bringing the doctor mind, and soul, back to the mdern day. This, when the doctor heard the deputy asking "Are you alright?"
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What happened, here?" The deputy would say "Nobody really knows. Plenty of stories. Rumors. Camp-fire stories. That kind of thing."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Did a family, once, live here?" The deputy would say "Thats how the stories began."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "My time is yours."
The deputy would say "At the heart, of most stories, IS a family. They seemed to prosper. Something happened. As if overnight, the family "vanished"."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "No follow up?" The deputy would say "No such thing, in those days. Remember that this was a territory, in those days. The only "law", IF you can call it that, was a federal marshall, and a circuit-riding judge. Both of these were men who rode the trails. True, frontier, justice."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What do you want, from me?" The deputy would say "I want a rational explanation. There are too many rumors. Rumors that this HOUSE is pulling planes out of the sky. I am ASKING you to prove that a house, which is nothing more than wood, glass, and gas lines, is NOT grabbing planes out of the sky."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Is it THAT serious?" The deputy would say "Including yours, 47 planes have developed engine problems. If I cannot find a rational explanation, for these events, the F.A.A. is sure to close our local airport. This, while declaring our town "un-safe air space".
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What would this mean, for the local economy?" The deputy would say "With only two industries remaining, closing the airport would DOOM the town. Anyone, who is left, would move, along with the jobs."
Doctor Rhoades would suggest "Leaving you in charge of a ghost town". The deputy would remark "Ghost towns dont need law enforcement. Last time I checked, Statutory Law does not apply, to the deceased."
This is when Doctor Rhoades would say "While my flight is delayed, I could aid your search, in finding rational explanations. If nothing else, we could DIS-prove the notion, that a house can pull airplanes from the sky."
The deputy would smile as he said "Thanks, doc. Excuse me, doctor."
The next day, as the message was delivered, that replacement jet engines, for the aircraft, were due in, the following week, Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would become well-acquainted, with the local library.
Something was bothering the doctor, about the visions.
HOW could a house, built of wood, and glass, have caused a community to refer to the former occupants as "Spawn of Satan"? What was that, in the vision, about "repenting"? What was it that the church wanted to home owners to repent?
While, in his third eye, Doctor Rhoades could "see" the man, with the golden crucifix, as clear as day (Even if through the flames, of Crucifiction), the doctor could SEE that the man was speaking. He just could not make out the words.
When Doctor Rhoades heard of a town meeting, being hosted by the remaining industries, Doctor Rhoades felt he should attend. Something was not "right", here. The doctor hoped to learn more, at the meeting.
By the time Doctor Rhoades arrived, however, the business people were, already, alerting locals to be prepared to re-locate. "IF the F.A.A. shuts down the airport, we have no other option."
This is when Doctor Rhoades would ask "What if I can PROVE that the house is NOT responsible?" The businessmen would say "We dont care about a house. We need an airport, to ship out goods. If the F.A.A...."
This is when Doctor Rhoades would but in, asking "If the F.A.A. is able to prove the skies are safe?"
The businessmen would say "As long as we have commerce connections, there will be no need to move operations."
When Doctor Rhoades would notice the meeting beginning to break up, he would call out "Does anyone, here, know of any lore, or any stories, of a man. Specifically, a man, wearing a golden cross, or golden crucifix?"
When someone called out "Since WHEN are crosses made of gold?" Doctor Rhoades would say "THAT is what I am trying to learn."
While no one, even the local minister, would admit to knowing anyone, who would OWN a golden cross, some senior citizen women were willing to speak of some old stories.
Doctor Rhoades was more-than-accustomed to hearing "Young man, we want you to understand that these stories have been handed down, from generation to generation."
When one, elderly, woman would add "More likely, passed down, over the centuries.", the former, elderly, woman would say "Anyway, we have none of that stuff that you young bucks call "evidence".
When Doctor Rhoades would say "I understand".
Various members, of the womens group, would fill in various sections, of the following story:
The story began in pioneer days. A time, when a young man would sell himself into slavery, for enough money to invest in some "doodle-fanger-thing" (NO one knew exactly WHAT it was).
When the investment brought back enough money, the man bought not only his own freedom, but that, of a slave woman, who had agreed to accompany the man, on his "trip".
The couple married, then came out, west, and lived in a shed, while the man built his wife her "dream house".
The couple, then, raised three daughters, and four sons. All healthy, and strong.
For the family, life was good, until some man came to town. No one knew what church he belonged to. Only that the man spouted "God's word", as if he were one of Christs own disciples, being coached by Christ, himself.
While no one had paid any attention, for YEARS, to local goings on, when the man, whom, rumors say, wore an "amulet", came to town, asking about "suspicious goings on", while procliaming "Know ye all that NOT to speak, of sin is, in itself, a sin".
When, in the present, Doctor Rhoades would ask "Did anyone, including the church, check on the mans credentials?"
The seniors would say "Young man, in THOSE days, we didn't have a local priest. Like the judge, and the sheriff, we had a "circuit" priest. The priest stopped by, about every two, or three, months."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Then HOW did locals know that this man was, truly, a servant of God?" Another senior would add "Young man, the Scriptures tell us that the un-holy may neither READ, nor SPEAK, of the word of God."
Realizing that these people would not question faith, under any circumstances, Doctor Rhoades would say "You were saying that this man was asking about "anything unusual". HOW did suspicion come to rest upon the family, inside THAT, particular, house?"
This is when a senior man would enter the room, and the conversation. He did so even as he asked one of the women "I have finished my assigned chores. Ask the reverend if he has more work for me, before I return home."
While a woman went to deliver the message, the man would inform Doctor Rhoades "Since we are inside the Holy Fathers house, first, I will say that these are only stories."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "I understand. Please, go on." The senior man would say "My grand-father told me that, way back, in the "wild days" (pioneer days), when the man comes to town, gramps says he was told that some members, of our own family, turned in the homes family. This they did, out of fear of being seen as not cooperating with a messenger of God."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "In what way was the family turned in?" The man gripped his cap, while saying "The story I was told, as a boy, is that, becuase no one know HOW the young couple had enough money, to build a home, that the "preacher" was told of this."
This is when a senior lady would say "Dont forget the epidemic."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What epidemic?"" The senior man would say "Something, which wiped out half of the village. Most people, who caught it, died."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "You say MOST, who caught the illness. Did some survive the illness?"
A woman, weaving a quilt, would say "Only survivors we knew of were the couples children. Derndest thing, though. Those kids be sick, almost dead, then..."
Doctor Rhoades would ask "Then, what?"
The primary, elderly, woman would say "As if by the Lords own hands, them children got better."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Whats so suspicious, about that?" The woman would say "Doctor, in THOSE days, we didn't have all your fancy pills. All we had was FAITH."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "About the family?" The seniors would say "Stories say that, because no one knew HOW the children recoverred, that the "priest" announced that only one conclusion was possible.
It HAD to be the work, of Satan!
Under the "command" and "control", of the "holy man", the family was dragged from their home, while fires were stoked, and branding irons were heated, until glowing, bright, red hot.
Once the seniors had shared all of the memories, and excitement, which aging bodies could take, Doctor Rhoades would borrow a car, and return to the family's homes location.
Upon arrival, the doctor did not know why, but he felt like un-seen hands were touching flaming lighters to his skin.
When Doctor Rhoades would sit, on a nearby boulder, focusing his mind, while reviewing his credentials, he felt the burning sensations dissipating.
Still, with eyes closed, and using the "third eye", Doctor Rhoades received visions, of how brutal man could be, towards his own kind.
As an observer, Doctor Rhoades watched, (and now, LISTENED), as the man, with the golden cross, presented "Gods judgement".
With clothes ripped away, from their backs, the priest would give the family members a final chance, at Repentence, saying:
"By the glory of the Almighty God, if these sinners be willing to confess their sins, in the presense, of the Lord, our God, and to repent their ways, may God show us the path, to show mercy upon their souls."
When the husband had asked "What crimes are we accused of?" The "priest" would, only, say "Crimes, against the Lord, our God".
When Doctor Rhoades thought "Man, could you be any LESS specific?" Doctor Rhoades THOUGHT he saw looks cast, more-or-less, in his direction. When he projected "Sorry", the vision continued.
Through the use of massive tree branches, boards, wrappped in barbed wire, and red hot irons, the villagers, under the "command" of the "priest", tortured the family into confession.
As Doctor Rhoades watched this "massacre" taking place, he realized the reason why the family's faces seemed so serene. So Peaceful.
The family members were welcoming death, by the purifying fires, as this would mark the END of the torture.
What Doctor Rhoades could not understand was the reason why, as the family burned to death, and smiles came upon their faces, the "priest" ordered "More wood. More kerosene. They are fleeing Gods Justice. They must NOT be allowed to escape."
By the time the holocaust was completed, Doctor Rhoades found his next question answered, when the "priest" ordered "Spawn of Satan, are to be buried, in UN-marked, non-sanctified, graves. May their souls be bound to this area, for all eternity."
It was when Doctor Rhoades realized that the grave-diggers were digging where he was resting, that the doctor moved aside.
While not overly religious, by trade, Doctor Rhoades did "cross" himself, as he whispered an apology, to those whose graves he had, un-knowingly, sat upon.
Returning to the present, Doctor Rhoades remembered the "priests" words. The man had not said "May your souls be bound, to this land, or to this house, for all eternity". The man had said "To this AREA."
Now, Doctor Rhoades understood WHAT was happening, and WHY.
The next step would be for Doctor Rhoades to ask for copies of the flight plans, of each, disabled, plane.
While Doctor Rhoades had thought he might have to go through F.A.A. red tape, for the information, it seems the deputy was ahead of the doctor, atleast on this part, of the mystery.
It would seem that sheriff, and deputy, had a bet going on, about WHY only cerrtain flights were experiencing engine troubles.
Doctor Rhoades was amazed by the fact that, on close examination, ALL of the affected flights passed, directly, over the subject property.
When the sherriff would laugh, asking "HOW can ghosts bring down airplanes?" Doctor Rhoades would say "I have observed stranger things."
When both the sherriff, and the deputy, would ask "What do we do?" Doctor Rhoades would suggest "For the time being, have air traffic control route ALL flights AROUND that property. Call it a "No Fly Zone", if that helps."
When the deputy would ask Doctor Rhoades "What do YOU plan to do?" Doctor Rhoades would say "I am going to try and ease some pain, and suffering. Maybe, lay some souls to rest."
While Doctor Rhoades expected to find the families tortured souls, on the land, what the doctor did NOT expect to find was what confronted him.
Namely, the souls, of more modern day people. Most were hikers, or campers. People who, in the age before mobile phones, and G.P.S., had died, of injuries, or exposure, before help could arrive.
It would take close to a week, of effort, for the doctor to detect all of the souls, which awaited passage to eternity.
Several, of these people, provided the doctor with "last messages", for family members.
One, young, girl, however, was among the most tragic.
Hoping for more attention, at home, the girl had run away, and chosen an old cave, to hide in.
The girls hope was that, if she stayed away, for just one week, that her family would begin SEEING her.
What the girl had not counted upon was a severe thuunderstorm, which had caused the cave to collapse, burying the girl, alive.
When Doctor Rhoades contacted the girls parents, he could feel the grief, and sadness, "rolling off of them", even as both admitted to the same thing which the girls spirit had informed the doctor.
While her parents had "heard" their daughters cries, for help, the parents could not tell police WHERE the cries came from.
The night the girl died, her parents found themselves sitting, in the livingroom, all night long, looking over their daughters life, as presented in school pictures, as well as the family album.
The couple told the doctor "We were so afraid that, IF we put the pictures down, she would be gone, forever."
This matched with what the girl had said, about her final night. The girls spirit had told the doctor "I thought, of my parents, all night long. I kept hoping. I kept their faces in my mind."
Just as Doctor Rhoades had used his calming voice, and gentle touch, to free the girls soul, from its torment, he used the same "treatment", with her family.
Grief Therapy, as all doctors know, is one of the ugliest jobs a doctor has.
Whether the loss is of a child, sibling, spouse, or parent, the pain is no less a "butcher knife" through the heart, and soul.
A girl, who had thought that her family did not notice her, would be grieved, for years to come.
Paying one, final, visit, to the homes location, Doctor Rhoades would see, in his "third eye", the now-smiling souls, of the departed, as they stood amid relatives, ready to make the passage into eternity.
Now, regular air traffic could resume as yet another, of the most un-expected cases, to date, was resolved.
By the time Doctor Rhoades was able to "check in", on his intended patient, the doctor would find the mans family grieving.
Neither his wife, nor his children, could understand WHY the man had taken his own life (In order to prevent what he believed was his family's effort, to take his life).
Another question, left un-answwered, was WHAT had caused the man to think that his family wanted to murder him?
Since Doctor Rhoades knew false grief, from real pain, the doctor could tell these people were in real pain.
Dimentia had claimed yet another victim. If only science could learn the reason WHY.
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE #4
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 4
Doctor Johnathan Rhoades, medical doctor, and licensed psychiatrist. A man who DARES to look PAST the obvious, and discover what is at the HEART, of patients conditions.
The following is case-file number 4, of Doctor Rhoades highly unusual approach to treatment, of mental disorders.
The case-file notes, on this patient, seem to indicate that the patient believes that she is "witnessing" abductions, and sexual violation, from remote locations.
The patients family physician, and her parents, are concerned over the girls health. While no one knows WHY the girl is having these "nightmares", there is growing concern that the "visions" could impair the childs ability to grow into full adulthood.
Is such a conclusion possible?
This is why I have agreed to consult on the case. If I can bring the child some peace-of-mind then her development will continue, at a normal pace.
My initial reaction, upon reviewiing the file, is that the girl either has a very active imagination, OR that she may be a "victim", of advanced stage Precognition.
If it is a case, of a purely wild imagination, then the treatment would be simple. Engage the child in activities, which would take her mind off of the fearrs, which drive her nightmares.
Precognition, however, would be a trickier diagnosis. If the condition is Precognition, then the only "cure" (if it can be called a cure), will be to teach the child to control her abilities. (Something even most adults fiind difficult, at best.)
My reasoon, for suspecting Precognition is the following:
At abbout the same time that each set, of nightmares, start (atleast according to the childs doctors), I have performed an internet search, and verified that, thousands of miles away, another child "vaniishes". No clues, left behind.
According to police, as quoted, in the arrticles, even the suspicion, of Chloroform, has been ruled out, since there is no trace evidence, to support the use of this chhemical.
If these are kidnappings, HOW does the kidnapper encourage each child to accompany themm, without being drugged?
In regarrds to the patient, her nightmares begin at about thhe time when each child is taken.
While the child has been sedated, several times, her doctors suggest that the strain might, eventually, cause permanent harm.
It would seem that I have been "called in", due to the parents making contacts, which have informed the parents of my work, with other patiients.
While no oone is even admitting too the existance, of the missing woman, it seems that the man, believed to be descended, from a vampire, as well as th man, cured of a fear of fire, have been circulatiing, among a variety of people. In regards to this, my primary cooncern is that my work, with medicine, MIGHT be taken out of context.
Still, in a case, where a childs health, and life, may be in danger, I have agreed to consult, evenn if only to bring peace to a chiilds mind.
While I have taken every precautioon, to AVOID "fanfare", whhenever possible, there are, still, times, when people try to seek out my services.
By the time I arriived at the home, of the child, it seems that the child has undergone ANOTHER "episode". As her doctor woulld tell me: "The child became extremely agitated, about three hours agoo. She claims that ANOTHER child has been abducted, and that the abductor has a very bizzarre motive, in his crimes."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Such as?" The doctor woulld say "The chiild insists that the abductor begins, each time, seekiing out a daughter, which he believes is lost, to him."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "Makes sense. Manyy parents, whoo have lost chiildren, especially to disease, or injury, have trouble coing with the loss."
The doctor woulld say "Thats not the worst part." When Doctor Rhoades would say "Please, proceed". The doctor would say "The child belives that, each time the abductor realizes that the victim is NOT his child, he becomes sane, loong enough, to realize his mistake. After that, the "madness" returns, and he rapes, then murderers, the children, out of pure rage."
Doctor Rhoades would say "Then, the whoole cycle starts all over again." This is when the local sheriff woulld enter the coonversation, sayying "Unless we can find a way to STOP him."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What purposse woulld I serve, in such an investigation?" The sheriff woulld say "Simple. You do what you do, to send people whereever they go. Have her give us as many details, as possible, and the police willl follow up."
When Doctor Rhoades would suggest "You do understand that we MIGHT be dealing with nothing more than nightmares, here, dont you?" The sheriff woulld say "Dreams, nightmares. It doesn't matter what you call them. You know, as I do, that we have a mad-man out there. He MUST be stopped."
It was not until the girl came out of the heavy dose, of drugs, that Doctor Rhoades would make a startling discovery.
While the girl was fearful, that the killer might come for her, next, it was when Doctor Rhoades placed the girl into a light hypnosis that she calmed, and began explaining what the killer knew.
Prior to the "New World Order", the man had been a hard-working husband, and father. While hiis wife was happy, to be married, so loong as the man had his factory job, when the plant closed down, and moved to a third world nation, and without any warning, the wife packed up the children, and vanished.
While the man TRIED to hire private investigators, to aid his search, none were willing to help, unless the man provideed a $10,000 deposit.
This is why the man became a wanderer. He wandered the nation, searching for his family.
This is when the sheriff woulld surprise Doctor Rhoades, by adding "Dont forget the times, when strangers tried to trick the man into thinking that THEY were his family."
When the girl woulld say "That is true." and the sheriff would say "Once he found out about the fakes, he made the decision, which turned a desperate father into an "engine of destruction". The girl woulld say "He KILLED the fakes, to prevent them froom harming anyone else."
This is when Doctor Rhoades realized that these two people were connected.
While the sheriff might noot be connected, to the killer, he had a DEFINITE connectioon, to the girl. There was no other way that both coulld have access to the same information. The same details.
It was not until the girl said "The child is dead. He has killed her. He found out that she was not his daughter, so he killed her, for being fake."
This is when the sheriff confirmed the doctors thoughts, as he spoke, into his phone, telling his base "Send two pattrol cars, and a "meat-wagon", to the triiple pines." The girll woulld say "That is where he will leave the bbody."
After this, and in seperate sessioons, Doctor Rhoades would examine vboth the sheriff, and the girl. He had to be SURE, before he said a word.
It was not until he asked the sheriff things, which ONLY the girl would know, then Doctor Rhoades went to the girl, that she asked the doctor "Why did you ask him these questions?" Then the girl TOLD Doctor Rhoades what Doctor Rhoades had asked the sheriff.
After these sessions, Doctor Rhoades went to find out more, about the location, where the children had been taken, and murdered.
While Doctor Rhoades was CERTAIN that the sheriff was off, miles away, processing the latest report, while the girll was resting, under mild hypnosis, Doctor Rhoades found that, anytime he was not certain of which way to travel, in the woods, he would see either the sheriff, or the girl, pointing in the correct direction.
Questioon: Was the doctor seeing these people, or just IMAGINIING that he was seeing them? This, especially since neither spoke to the doctor. They just pointed in the correct direction.
In his "third eye", Doctor Rhoades "saw" the shack, where the man had kept his victims. When the doctors "third eye" showed him the sheriff, and the girl, shaking heads, just before hearing rifle shots, in the distance.
When Doctor Rhoades rushed to the source, of the sound, he found a body, slumped over, in a row boat, even as a hunter, on the opposite bank, would say "He wont kill no more children."
When Doctor Rhoades pulled the boat to shore, to check the body, he found that the hunter must have "enjoyed" the killing, since Doctor Rhoades found no less than eight bullet wounds, in the body.
When Doctor Rhoades emerged from the Telepathic experience, and returned to town, to report his experience, includiing seeing that the boat was tied, securely, to the bank, of the river, and reported the shooting, all the sheriff, and the deputy, would ask was "Are you SURE thats what you saw, and heard?"
When Doctor Rhoades repeated both the description, and the mans words, the sheriff would half-whisper, to Doctor Rhoades, "Look, doc, I am sure that you are good, at what you do. What I, also, know, to be a fact, is that the man you say you saw, at the river, died, of hunting injuries, maybe thirty years ago."
When Doctor Rhaodes would say "I saw him, plain as I see you." The sheriff woulld say "I never said he was "gone". I said he was dead."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Explain?" The sheriff would say "Lost hikers, campers, and even those, with flat tires, report that this man aids them, when they need it. He comes out of nowhere, aids victims, then vanishes. Just be grateful for his help. Okay?"
When the national news verified that the killer had been stopped, Doctor Rhoades would make one, final, stop, before leaving town. Hooking up, to the towns primary internet connection, Doctor Rhoades would trace both the afflicted girl, and the sheriff, back through time.
While the doctor found no"concrete" evidence, of a link, it seems that both the sheriff's family, and the afflicted girls family, "just appearred", in the area, maybe a century before. Maybe more. All the records show is that, at one point, the families were VERY close. Over time, however, the two grew apart.
COULD this be how the gift was shared? Genetics?
While Doctor Rhoades confiirmed, via half of the police department, that the sheriff was at the station, at the approximate time Doctor Rhoades asked about,
And the girl was, reeportedly, resting, comfortably, this left Doctor Rhoades wondering "What DID I see, in the woods? Was it Astral Projection? Telekinesis?"
Doctor Rhoades would leave yet another case, only partially resolved. Since the child was at peace, and the murderer was verified as dead, Doctor Rhoades agreed that his assignment was over with.
Still, Doctor Rhoades would be left to wonder HOW an image, from so far away, could be seen, and felt, as if it were right in front of him.
Time to pack, and return home.
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE #3
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 3
Doctor Johnathan Rhoades, medical doctor, and licensed psychiatrist. A man who DARES to look PAST the obvious, and discover what is at the HEART, of patients conditions.
The following is case-file number 3, of Doctor Rhoades highly unusual approach to treatment, of mental disorders.
After having relieved the mental distress, of a woman, who believes she is being followed, by unknown persons, I have been referred to another patient.
According to the patients file, the woman is suffering delusions, regarding a non-existant cabin. A cabin which, according to her file, the woman maintains DOES exist.
It would seem that the reason why my services are being sought is that, allegedly, the woman has a habit, of "vanishing", for days, weeks, or even months, at a time.
While my local contacts include both the womans doctor, who can, no-more explain her condition than he can explain the nature, of the universe, as well as the local sheriff.
From the file, the sheriff remains adamant that, despite thorough searches, of the area, while the woman is missing, no one remembers seeing the woman leave, or return, from the town.
According to the sheriff "While my office is, frequently, called, to trace the woman, no matter how many times we search the area, even with dogs, helicopters, and night vision, until the woman wants to be found, no trace, of her, is to be found. My question is: HOW can a person, female, or male, vanish, so completely, in a community, of this size?"
This case file would remind Doctor Johnathan Rhoades of a similar case. One, which he studied, during his internship.
In the case, which the doctor remembered, the patient claimed not to be human, at all. When the patient went missing, each time, and was "captured", the patient would say that they were "communing with nature".
In that case, the sheriff did not "buy" this story, for a moment. The sheriff had noted "With the number, of hunters, who were out, searching, for the patient, there was no way the patient could have avoided being spotted."
As Doctor Rhoades recalled, NO explaination ever seemed to "fit" the case. Not even the idea that the patient was maneuvering, among the hunters, taking supplies, as they needed them.
While hunters were supplied, with field rations, during the search, none, of the hunters came up, short of food.
Doctor Rhoades recalled that, when some fellow students had asked the instructor "What was the final conclusion, of the case?" the students noticed how rapidly the instructor had moved on, to "fresh" material.
When intern Rhoades had attempted to make further inquiries, about the case, his access was blocked, and he was warned "Do NOT question what you do not understand. We are here to train doctors. Not to indulge in fantasy."
Even as Johnathan Rhoades worked towards his medical degree, he could not escape the fact that some cases just did not make sense.
Cases, such as the automobile, which had, somehow, gone from being in Florida, U.S.A., one moment, and being in Europe, just a moment later.
Now, Doctor Rhoades was being called upon, to consult on another, baffling, case.
Upon his arrival, in town, Doctor Rhoades would be met, by both the sheriff, and the local doctor, who was in attendance, at the sheriff's office.
When Doctor Rhoades would enter the sheriff's office, he would hear the doctor arguing "I tell you, the patient is at Whispering Woods." The sheriff would counter with "Doctor, I'm telling you. Search teams have been through those woods, five times. All that anyone has found are some empty beer cans, some lost fishing equipment, and those two, missing tents, from the last storm."
It was not until the sheriff saw Doctor Rhoades, that he cut off the doctor, who was saying "I have studied the patients history..."
When the sheriff would ask "May I help you, sir?" Doctor Rhoades would identify himself, then ask "May I ask who is missing?"
This time, the doctor would cut off the sheriff, as the doctor would say "I am afraid that you have made this trip, for nothing." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "May I ask why?" The doctor would say "My patient has gone missing, again. While I am certain that she is in the Whispering Woods, the sheriff, here, disagree's with me."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Sheriff, may I ask why you disagree?" The sheriff would say "Doc, my men have been all over those woods, for two days. There aint nothing there, except abandoned, and lost, camping gear, and some wild animals. Nothin to be scared of. Just 'coons, squirrels, and other, such things."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the doctor "Tell me. Why do you believe that the patient is in that area?" It would be the sheriff who would say "Since you are, new, here, doctor, I will be friendly, and share some information. Fact is that, of the past eleven times the woman has gone missing, nine, of those times, she comes out of the Whispering Woods. Just dont ask me HOW she avoids our search parties."
Later, at the local hospital, Doctor Rhoades would meet with the local doctor, over coffee, saying "Doesn't it seem odd that a person can "vanish" so often, yet only turn up, when they choose to?"
The doctor would, only, say "What I cant figure out is HOW she gets OUT, of the hospital ward. I mean, its not like the patients are not under supervision."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How many staff on duty, at a given time?" The doctor would say "Three nurses, and four orderlies. For a hospital, this size, thats all we, usually, need."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What about the security footage?" The doctor would say "While we may not be as "advanced" as those big city hospitals, we are not stone-age, either. Each entrance has its own guard. Most are retiree's, but all are of good health, and good eye-sight. No one, not even staff, comes and goes, without checking with these men."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "Sounds like a sound set up. What is YOUR opinion, of how the patient leaves the property?" The doctor would say "I would give a months pay, for the answer to that question."
While the search parties continued their vigil, Doctor Rhoades would review the patients file. Based upon the original, contact, information, Doctor Rhoades had been lead to believe that the patients actions were recent.
According to her file, however, the woman began "vanishing", as a child. In fact, the reason why the woman was placed under "observation", was because, beginning with childhood, the girl had spoken of visiting a cabin. A cabin, located in the Whispering Woods.
According to the child's own testimony, "I go there, to play with my friend. We have fun, playing games. Her parents are nice people. They let us play, as long as we want to."
A doctors notation would question "HOW could a modern, grade school girl know about a cabin, which has not existed, for over a century?"
When Doctor Rhoades would go to the internet, looking for information, he found a "piece", in an archive, about local history.
The article claimed that locals considered a certain farm house to be "bewitched", since, sometimes, the house, and the family, just "vanished", from time to time.
Some locals would not go near the house, since there was rumor that the family was making pacts with, or blood sacrifices, to Satan.
This suggestion, always, caused Doctor Rhoades to scratch his head. WHY, he wondered, did people, always, insist that anything, which was not "normal" was "satanic"?
Doctor Rhoades would chuckle at the thought that, IF the devil did everything, of which he was accused, the man would have to work triple over-time.
No, there had to be a rational explanatiion, for what had, and was, happening. The woman HAD to be going SOME-where. The question was "WHERE was she going?"
When the woman "returned", she, again, emerged from the Whispering Woods.
In the time before the womans return, when Doctor Rhoades had asked locals "Why is that area called the Whispering Woods?"
All anyone would say was "Go out there, sometime, on your own, and you will understand."
When the woman DID return, it was from the same area, where she had come from, previous times. An area which had been, thoroughly, searched, dozens of times.
What baffled both doctors, and law enforcement, was WHERE the woman got her clothes, which she wore, upon her return.
While the hospital staff swore that the woman MUST have left the hospital, wearing a hospital gown (since her clothes remained in hospital lock-up), all the woman would say was "My friends let me borrow some of their clothes."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the woman "And your friends names are?" The woman would look at her doctor, asking "Have you not told this man WHOM I visit, when I leave the hospital?"
When Doctor Rhoades would use a quiet voice, asking "First, would you tell me HOW you exit the hospital?" He saw how thoughtful the woman was, about the question. This, before answering "I really dont know. One moment, I am inside the ward and, the next, I am outside."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Outside, where?" The woman would say "I am on a road. No, that is not right. I am on a trail. Not a road. A trail, like horses use."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Where does this trail lead to?" The woman would say "It leads to my friends home." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Do you see your friends home?" The woman would say "Not at this point. I know this is the path, though." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "HOW do you know this is the right path?" The woman would say "I have taken this path, many times. I KNOW the tree's, by sight. Even after dark. I know which way to go."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "When you see your friends home, would you describe it, for me." Doctor Rhoades noticed how un-easy the staff were, when the woman described the details, of a farm house, which locals knew, only from lore, and legend.
When the patient added the names, of the family members. Names, which were not of public record, and were recorded ONLY by the local church, the un-ease increased, until the staff doctor would say "I think that is enough, for today."
While the woman seemed disappointed, that the conversation had been cut short, Doctor Rhoades KNEW the reason why. This is why Doctor Rhoades agreed that a break was in order.
Instead of joining staff, for snacks, in the employee break-room, however, Doctor Rhoades would drive out, to the location, known as the Whispering Woods. He wanted to see the place, for himself.
Upon arrival, however, Doctor Rhoades would verify that the sheriff had been correct. There was nothing but forest, for a few miles around.
It was not until Doctor Rhoades entered the forest, and opened his mind, hoping for telepathic communication, that the doctor would come to understand the reason WHY towns-people never saw the cabin.
It was via the "third eye" that Doctor Rhoades would come to "see" the cabin, in the woods. A cabin, which did not exist, in the third dimension. It was more like an "imprint", on the landscape.
While Doctor Rhoades could "see" that the cabin was rustic, and that the inhabitants appearred to be "pioneer" type people, the doctor got the STRONG impression that these people were neither primitive, nor from the past.
In fact, if the doctor believed in time travel, he would have thought these people came, from the FUTURE. Some sort of time travel experiment?
Johnathan Rhoades ruled this out, immediately. Time travel went against everything that science "knew" about life. Besides, WHO would want to travel, to the past? For WHAT purpose?
As Doctor Rhoades returned to the road, and his car, he had the odd sensation, like he was crossing something like a dimensional barrier. While he would note the feeling, its location, and as many details, as he could remember, he reached his car, still, feeling a bit odd.
As if someone were using telepathy on him, a voice, inside his head, would say either "She is coming home." or "She has come home."
Once the feeling passed, Doctor Rhoades would write his notes, then return to the hospital. He wanted another discussion, with the staff.
Somehow, Doctor Rhoades KNEW, from the moment that he drove onto the hospital grounds, that the police were present, because of the woman.
When Doctor Rhoades joined in the discussion, only to hear "We KNOW she was in her room. Jack, and Salvador, lead her there. The guards checked her in." When the sheriff asked "If that is true, then HOW did she get out?"
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Got out of where?" The staff doctor would say "When the nurse brought the woman her medications, she found the room empty. No damage, to windows, or the door. The patient was just gone."
While the police scrathed their heads, over HOW a patient could escape a secure ward, two staff doctors would ask Doctor Rhoades "Well, Mr. Expert, What do YOU think?" Doctor Rhoades would suggest "Since she has gone to the Whispering Woods, before, shall we begin there?"
From the moment, when the "convoy", of private, and police, vehicles, arrived, at the Whispering Woods, Doctor Rhoades KNEW something was different.
While the police prepared the search dogs, to begin the canvas, Doctor Rhoades would walk into the forest, to the area, where he had "visioned" the cabin.
For a few, fleeting, moments, Doctor Rhoades, in his "third eye" saw the woman, with the family. The woman had joined the families daughters in one of those dance-type activities, which pioneer girls practiced, prior to social events (where the girls hoped to find husbands).
In that moment, Doctor Johnathan Rhoades KNEW that the woman had found both happiness, and peace.
Whether she was in the pioneer past, or a distant future, the patient was at peace. No more trips, to the psych ward.
Doctor Rhoades was certain of only one thing. The woman would not be heard from, again. Atleast not in this lifetime.
Still, the doctor was happy that the womann had, at last, found happiness.
Final case entry: While police, and other, records, show the woman to be a "Missing Person", I am left to wonder if, one day, she might choose to visit. Maybe just to inform her family that she is well.
While I cannot quantify this information, I did notice, prior to departure, that the Whispering Woods seems more at peace. Maybe, the forest has found the one it sought.

THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 2
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE # 2
Doctor Johnathan Rhoades, medical doctor, and licensed psychiatrist. A man who DARES to look PAST the obvious, and discover what is at the HEART, of patients conditions.
The following is case-file number 2, of Doctor Rhoades highly unusual approach to treatment, of mental disorders.
"In this case, I have been confronted with some of the most bizzarre circumstances which I have, ever, dealt with.
For instance, upon entering town, I experienced a "vision", of some sort. In my mind, I could see a "vehicle", of unknown origin, which had landed in a nearby meadow, or clearing.
Before proceeding to the patients location, I followed my instincts, and these lead me to the very clearing, which I had visualized.
While I had no idea of WHY, I felt as if some sort of energy had been directed, at this area, during the past. Some, of the energy, felt as old as the United States, itself. Some of the energy, however, seemed "fresh", as if from the proceeding month."
After examining the area, Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would proceed to a local hospital, where he would find the patient in a padded cell.
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Why is she in a padded cell? Has she harmed a patient, or staff?" The womans doctor would say "No, doctor. The patient requested a padded cell. She refused to sleep, until within the padded walls. She insists something is after her."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "You mean some-ONE." The staff doctor would say "No, I mean some-THING." When Doctor Rhoades would seem confused, the staff doctor would ask "Doctor, would you step into my office, please."
When the two doctors were behind closed doors, the staff doctor would ask "Have you become familiar, with her file?" When Doctor Rhoades would admit "I have, only, just received the file. What is it you want to tell me?"
The staff doctor would say "Doctor Rhoades, I have been following your "work", since you completed medical school. I am aware, of those who have come to you, for care. I say this because I want us to understand one another. While I am aware, of those, who claim that hypnotherapy can produce results, I remain skeptical, of those results."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "It so happens that I agree with you. It is so very easy to plant false memories. This is why, in my work, which I invite you to observe, I never pose "leading" questions, to patients. I would consider this un-ethical. All that I do is ask people to relate what they are visualizing, then, when possible, I attempt to aid them, with accepting what they see."
When the staff doctor would ask "So, you deny telling people such things as "You are a younng woman, in the colonies, and you are ashamed of not aiding your siblings, to survive a storm?". That, and telling a man that he is a descendant, of a vampire?"
Doctor Rhoades would correct the doctor, saying "I would never "plant" such thoughts. In the one case, a man was terrified, of fire. He neeeded to overcome the fear. That meant discoverring the SOURCE of the fear. That it turned out to be a colonial childs spirit was soomething even I never expected."
When the staff doctor would ask "Why did you tell a modern man that he was a descendant, of a vampire?" Doctor Rhoades would respond "Doctor, it seems your information is FAR from accurate. I never told the man that he was descended, from a vampire."
When the staff Doctor would ask "What DID you tell the patient?" Doctor Rhoades would inform the staff doctor "After doing some research, I found that the patient was, indeed, descended from a man, who was ACCUSED of being a vampire. It would seem that the soul, of the murdered man, could not find rest, until his descendant arrived, to clear his name."
When the staff doctor would ask Doctor Rhoades "Did you, actually, tell/project the thought, either to the patient, or to others, for the pain to depart the patients?" Doctor Rhoades would say "To be correct, in each case, all I did was send out a strong counter-thought. One, of saying "Let the pain of the past, return to the past. Let the living, and the dead, rest in peace."
(Doctor Rhoades never spoke of the spirits, who came to comfort the living, after the experiences.)
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the staff doctor "Why did you ask me if I am familiar with the girls case?" The staff doctor would say "I, un-fortunately, am all too familiar, with the case." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Such as?" The staff doctor would say "Over the years, the girl has been in, and out, of the hospital. Everytime we try different drugs, the girl seems to be balanced, when she departs the hospital."
Doctor Rhoades would say "I hear a BUT coming." The staff doctor would say "The patient seems to be doing well, for weeks, sometimes months, at a time. Then comes the call, for help."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Such as". The staff doctor would say "She goes into a blind panic, saying that "goblins are after me."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Goblins?" The staff doctor would say "Sorry, that my word. Her word is "frightening-looking, short, beings. Something like dwarfs." She claims they follow her and, at times, abduct her."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Has she, ever, drawn one, for you?" The staff doctor would produce drawings, saying "She says this is something like what they look like."
When Doctor Rhoades would view the drawings, the staff doctor would say "My conclusion, as well. I THINK she is creating her own nightmares, after watching to many movies, or specials, about aliens."
Doctor Rhoades would say "Subliminal Suggestion would be my thought, as well. May I see her?"
Since Doctor Rhoades HAD, during his residency, seen plenty of "straight-jacket" cases, he saw what was strange, even viewing the young woman, through the one way glass.
Never before had Doctor Rhoades seem a padded room occupant so at peace.
The staff doctor would agree. "If she hadn't insisted upon a padded cell, I feel she is well enough for a bed, in the regular ward."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Did she give a reason, for WANTING a padded cell?" The staff doctor would say "She insists that the padding "protects" her from "them". She claims they say they cannot find her, behind the material, of the cell."
What Doctor Rhoades found interesting, was the fact that the young woman was willing to meet with him, but ONLY on the condition that the conversation be held inside the padded cell.
When Doctor Rhoades asked the woman her reason, she seemed nervous, as she said "I dont want them to get me." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Why would hospital staff want to harm you?"
The woman looked at the one-way mirror, saying "Its not the hospital staff. Its THEM I am afraid of." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "If not the hospital staff, then WHO is them?" When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Is "them" a family member, or a friend?" He noticed how the woman curled into the fetal position.
This is when Doctor Rhoades would try simple hypnotherapy, by showing the woman an object. When the woman went, deeper, into fetal position, Dcotor Rhoades knew of the one thing, which would draw the woman out.
While it would take three days, to gain hospital permission, Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would use this time, both to review the womans case, and the location, which left the odd sensation.
It was not until the third day that the local sheriff turned up, asking "Are you one of them college fellows. The ones who keep trying to plant things, here, trying to see what will grow?" Doctor Rhoades would, only, say "I am a medical doctor, not a botanist. I work with sick people."
When the sheriff would ask "Whats your interest, in this area, then?" Doctor Rhoades would counter with "Why do you say that people keep trying to grow plants, here?"
The sheriff would say "Darndest thing. My grand-dad used to say this was a meadow, of flowers. He claimed that, in the summer, the place was like a floral portrait".
My grand-mother agreed. She said that was why, when grand-dad proposed to her, near this very spot, she accepted. She said it was beautiful."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What happened to this place. Why wont anything grow, now?" The sheriff would say "Danged if I know. Even those plant people dont know why nothing grows here."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "About how long has it been, since anything grew here?" The sheriff would say "I would say about 18-25 years. I would say thats pretty accurate."
Doctor Rhoades would consider "About the time the womans mother was pregnant, with the young woman, or the girl was just born."
When Doctor Rhoades would, next, travel to the family home, he was not surprised to find the father not at home. What DID surprise the doctor was just how closed-mouthed the mother was, and how desperate the woman was, to deny that anything had happened.
As any good psychiatrist can attest, such passionate denial is the greatest test, of truth, that exists. The more passionately a person denies something happened, the more likely that the information is truth.
With an agreement to have four orderlies, two nurses, and a staff doctor, present, Doctor Rhoades would take the group to the meadow in question.
Doctor Rhoades suspicions were confirmed, when almost no one WANTED to enter the area.
While the young woman was "antsy" at best, Doctor Rhoades asked the nurses not to inject the woman, just yet. When the nurses looked at the staff doctor, the staff doctor would say "Let Doctor Rhoades proceed."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the woman "What are you afraid of. Will you tell me?" The woman would say "Them!". When Doctor Rhoades would whisper "Calm down and tell me "WHO is them?""
The woman would say "The others." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "WHO are the others? Do you know them?" The woman would say "No, but mom knows them. She wont admit it but she knows them."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "HOW do you know your mother knows "them"?" The woman would say "Mom tells me not to be afraid. She "says" they are collecting."
After this, and fearing that he was not getting what he needed, to help the woman, he would place the girl into a trance, saying "We are going back, over the years. Back to the beginning. Back to the start. The day it all began."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What do you see?" The woman would say "I see a place. People dressed, all fancy, like a ball." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What are the people doing?" The woman would say "Most are eating, drinking, and dancing."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Some, but not all. What are the others doing?" The woman would say "A woman, she looks so familiar. Cant place her, but she looks so much like..."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Like who?" The woman would say "Like my grand-mother. How can that be?" When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Can you see a calendar?" When the woman would say "Yes, I see a calendar. It is very fancy." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Can you see the date." The woman would say "All I can see is the year. I cant see the rest. bright light, blocking the rest."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What year does the calendar show." The woman would say "the year is 875 A.D."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Do you see anything else?" The woman would say "thats odd". When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What do you see?" The woman would say "I see the woman, returning to the party." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Why do you think that is odd." The woman would say "I can, also, see the same woman, in a window, on the machine. HOW can she be two places, at once?"
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "The woman, in the window. Is she in pain. Is she being restrained." The woman would say "No, she seems content".
As the "session", in the meadow, would move forward, in time, the woman would reveal that the machine HAD "visited" the family, from time to time. Perhaps, however, "visited" would be the wrong word.
From the buried memories, of the past, Doctor Rhoades would discover that, for some, unknown, reason, everytime disease, or famine, wiped out the family, the ship would return, delivering a new (cloned) family member. One who was immune to the disease.
The family would go on, generation after generation.
From what Doctor Rhoades was able to deduce, it would seem that the family had been "marked", or "tagged". Reason, unknown. What seemed even less rational was the reason WHY the ships would track the family, from Europe, to the America's.
Could they be studying human evolution?
It would not be until the end of the session, when Doctor Rhoades would instruct the woman "You are coming back to the present. Ride the path, of time, like a gentle, river, current. Closer, closer, the years fall away." Then, suddenly, the woman would say "Stop! I KNOW why they have come. They intend to kidnap me."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "WHO? Who wants to kidnap you?"
This is when a voice, which Doctor Rhoades remembered as the young womans mother, would join in the discussion, saying "Its not you, my daughter, that they want. I keep telling you that."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the mother "Then, WHO are they, and WHO DO they want?" The mother would say "It will be my grand-daughter, whom they are coming for."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How can you know this?" The woman would say "I know this because they told me. They told me, when I was but a school girl. My grand-daughter is the one they want."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "WHY?" The mother would say "There will come a time, when man will become irrational, with fear, and suspicion, ruling the world. They plan to alter my grand-child so that she may bring rational thought back to the world."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "You said "they". Who are "they"." The mother would say "They are from a race, far in advance of our own. They travel the stars, hoping to prevent catastrophy, by alterring certain members, of each society, to ask the right questions, at the right times."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What have they done, to your daughter? Why she she so afraid of them?" The mother would say "My daughter is much more advanced, in her mental powers, than could have been predicted. Not even "they" predicted this. "They" have been studying her, in order to understand HOW she could have lept so far ahead, of the rest of us, so fast."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "How FAR ahead of us has she developed?" The young woman would say "I see a great city. A city of crystal. Amazing ships, from across the universe. This planet is a hub, or port. I see..."
Then, the woman would collapse, into the doctors arms. When the staff doctor would say "Coma", Doctor Rhoades would say "Mental collapse. What she saw overloaded her mind."
When her mother would ask "What can we do, to take away the pain?" Doctor Rhoades would recall the woman, from her trance, to a time, before her birth, whispering "Your mother has been contacted." The woman would say "Yes, I feel that she is in contacct." Doctor Rhoades would whisper "Remember, you are only an observer. Do you remember what contact was made?"
The woman would say "While mother is calm, I am afraid." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Of what?" The woman would say "Of what is to come. I dont want to see the future. I want to go back to the past. I want to go back."
This is when Doctor Rhoades would whisper "Fine, the memory is returning to the past. Let it fly, on the wings of birds. It is flying away. You are free of the vision."
When the womans body went slack, in the doctors arms, Doctor Rhoades would whisper "As I count back, from ten, I want you to flow, soft and smooth, back into the present. The past is past. Now, you will return to the present."
When Doctor Rhoades counted down, from ten, to one, slowly, the woman awakened, looked about her, asking "Mother, what are you doing here?" Her mother would ask "What else should a mother do? Watch after her baby."
When the woman straightened herself, then said "Oh, mother." Thats when the woman would say "Now, THATS my daughter."
While the young woman remained under observation, for a week, the woman no-longer requested a padded cell.
Final case note: While I do not believe that anyone, in the present, except the young woman, saw what she claimed to be a crystal city, of the future, I have to wonder.
I recall a lecture, given, during my internship. This, by a theoretical engineer. A man who had claimed that, someday, cities would be made of crystal, and that some version, of warp speed, would be in regular use.
Question: DID the young woman actually SEE the future, or was she just imagining things?
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE
THE NEW SIXTH SENSE
While Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would graduate medical school, with good enough grades, to earn his medical degree, the problem would be his approach, to psychiatric medicine.
While most doctors, working psychiatric wards, spend most of their time just dispensing pills, under the belief that altering brain chemistry, using drugs, was the solution, to ALL mental conditions, Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would take a different approach.
On occassions, when Doctor Rhoades had patients, who could describe scenario's, as if looking at a picture, or a movie, Doctor Rhoades would investigate the descriptions.
On more than a few occassions, when the doctor found locations, which matched descriptions, almost exactly, Doctor Rhoades would ask patients, during sessions, WHAT was so important about the locations.
It was not until Doctor Rhoades would ask orderlies to assist his work, in returning patients to the places they feared, that hospital staff asked orderlies to submit reports, on Johnathan Rhoades activities.
While the orderlies agreed to assist, the men were not about to report what they, actually, saw.
In one case, where a patient was so terrified, of fire, that they had holed up, in the basement, of a bank, until confined to the psych ward, when Doctor Rhoades drove the patient, to the location, which the patient, continually, saw in their nightmares, the orderlies stood by as Doctor Rhoades took the patient on a trip, back in time. A mental trip, in which the patient was returned to a time, maybe 150 years past, when someone had burned to death, in a fire.
While Doctor Rhoades calmed the patient, whispering "Remember, you are only seeing it as a memory. A vision, of the past, or a movie. No harm can come to you."
When the patient would say "I understand." Doctor Rhoades would ask "What do you see?" The patient spooked the orderlies when the patient would say "I see a house. A sod house. A prairie house. I see that an eldest daughter is being instructed to care, for her younger siblings, while parents are away, overnight."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Does something happen?" The patient would say "A storm gathers. There is lightning. I want to get my brothers and sisters out of the house, and into the celler."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What is preventing you from doing this?" The patient would say "Just as we are preparing to run, lightning stikes nearby tree's. My siblings are afraid to move. I want to run, for the celler, but I CANT leave them behind. I promised my parents."
While the orderlies KNEW the patients file, and knew that the MAN had only one sibling, a sister, who placed him into care, when she could not cope with his fear of fire, the orderlies wondered what family the man was talking about.
When Doctor Rhoades asked the patient "What is happening, now?" The patient would cry out "Lightning strikes the HOUSE! The place catches fire. We cannot get out, not with the lightning, and the rain. I have FAILED my parents. They trusted me!"
When the patient would add "I wanted my momma to be so proud of me, for taking charge, and protecting my my brothers and sisters. I have FAILED! HOW can they forgive me?!"
When the man broke down, weeping, like a school girl, the orderlies had no idea what to do, next. They had no training, in such cases.
Doctor Rhoades would calm the patient, saying "It was not your fault. You had no control of the weather. Now, it is time to forgive yourself. Leave the past in the past. Return to the present, as calmly as if swimming in a river. Let the tides, of time, carressess your body. Let peace flow over you."
When the man awoke, asking "Doc, did that really happen?" Doctor Rhoades would say "Long ago, a young woman died, trying to protect her siblings."
As the orderlies looked on, in disbelief, Doctor Rhoades, and the patient, would watch, as the spirits, of the deceased family members, would come forth, from the mist of time, with the mother, holding out a hand, towards the patient.
It was as the patient looked at the doctor, as if asking "What do I do?" all four, present, would watch, in complete dis-belief, when the girls tortured spirit would eminate, from the mans body, and embrace her mother.
With what Doctor Rhoades would take as a smile, of "Thanks", from the spirits, the family would vanish, back into the mist of time.
What no doctor, at the hospital, could explain was how, seemingly overnight, the patient had lost his terror, of fire.
All that the orderlies would report was that the doctor had used hypnosis, asking the patient "What do you see?"
It was only AFTER the event, that the orderlies asked the doctor HOW he knew the patient was being honest. The doctor would produce an old journal (or, atleast a copy), which stated that a farm house had burned to the ground, at that location. By the time the parents returned home, all that was left were ashes.
While the mother wrote that her daughter should feel no guilt, about the storm, it seems that the daughters spirit had retained its guilt, until freed, by the doctor.
While Doctor Johnathan Rhoades would "cure" five, additional, patients, using regression, to understand how the PAIN, of the past, could live on, through the centuries, as guilt, until the patient was regrressed, and allowed to heal, by letting the pain be released, back through time, This would earn the doctor a reputation as "un-conventional".
While Doctor Johnathan Rhoades had cured six people, of disabling phobia's, while practicing regular medicine, to graduate medical school, the problem was that clinics, and hospitals, did not want such a "maverick", in their midst.
This is why Johnathan Rhoades would go into private practice. While trained, as a medical doctor, the man would find himself consulting on cases which normal medicine could not fathom.
Cases, such as his first, since graduating medical school. A case, where a man was being diagnosed, as "Paranoid Delusional", since he claimed that a vampire was entering his home, while claiming, not via words, but via thoughts, that "You WILL be mine. I will have my revenge. You cannot escape me. We are bound, as one."
When Doctor Rhoades agreed to examine the man, the doctor came to wonder WHY the man was being listed as "delusional".
This because, during the mens conversations, the doctor noted that the man was accurate, lucid, answered questions, without hesitation, and even described an attacker.
When the patient had said "Sometimes, I see him, bending over bodies, like the vampires, from the movies." When the doctor would ask "How much blood does the vampire spill, during each case?" The patient would say "Thats what is so odd, about the visions. Even though I SEE him attacking his victims, there is, NEVER, any blood. Not on his teeth, his clothes. Not even on his victims."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the patient "About how often, or how regularly, does the vampire appear?"
This is when the patient would move, to a pile, of books, lifting some, then whispering "ONLY YOU and I, know where I keep this journal, now."
When the doctor looked at the journal, he noticed that the patient was keeping very accurate records, of each appearrance.
When the doctor asked "WHY?" The patient would say "In case someone, like you, came alone. I wanted there to be an accurate record, even if I was dead."
When Doctor Rhoades heard these words, from the patient, the doctor realized that the man was neither delusional, nor paranoid.
To Doctor Rhoades, it was obvious that the man had not said these words, with suicidal intent (as had been suspected). The patient just wanted a record, of his experiences, to survive, even if he, himself, did not survive.
After visiting the patient, Doctor Rhoades would visit the local library, for information, on the general area. If this town had been a more metropolitan city, the doctor MIGHT have been suspicious of the fact that the librarian KNEW what the doctor would seek, even as Doctor Rhoades entered the library.
Since this was a small town, however, the doctor knew there were no secrets. Everyone knew everyone, and no one passed through, without the town knowing about it.
Doctor Rhoades would notice that local history must have been re-written, by the Christians, since there was no mention, in all of the records, about two events, which Doctor Rhoades had studied, in medical school.
Doctor Rhoades recalled studying a case, in psychology class, regarding "Public Paranoia". A condition, which, a teacher had said, had lead to a woman being burned alive, on a cross, after refusing to admit having used "satanic" verses, to cause plant growth.
The teacher had emphasized "While there remains no record, of the womans actual words, I remain suspicious, of the conviction, due to the following fact:
I remember my own mother, and grand-mother, talking to, and even singing, to plants, as though the plants were listening.
Since no official records were kept, in the day, we will, never, know if the woman was conjuring evil, or just encouraging plant growth."
When then-intern Rhoades had asked the teacher "HOW are we to know that a person is conjuring evil, if we dont know which words they used?"
The teacher would, only, say "MR. Rhoades, there is no more answer, to THAT question than there is, to the question of "HOW do we know when a person is practicing Christianity."
Now, in the library, Doctor Rhoades knew that his next stop would be to find an internet cafe, which was OUT-side of this town. Something, which locals could not trace.
Twenty miles from town, Doctor Rhoades found what he sought. To avoid voice-tracing, the doctor sent only e-mails, asking for the information, which he wanted.
When Doctor Rhoades returned to his patient, he wanted to be armed with FACTS, not possibilities.
This, especially after patient had informed doctor "Vampires are for horror movies, and Halloween. I doubt anyone has, ever, seen a real vampire."
That evening, while Doctor Rhoades saw what he THOUGHT MIGHT have been a caped figure. This, on the road, leading into town.
The ONLY reason why he reorted it, to the police, was because, as Doctor Rhoades had said "The fool ran right in front of my car. I could have killed him."
All the police had asked was "DID you hit them?" Doctor Rhoades would say "Dont be a fool. If I had injured them, I would have called for an ambulance, on the spot."
When the police asked, AGAIN "What is it you THINK that you saw?" Doctor Rhoades would say "A dark figure, which emerged, as if leaping, from a bush, or a hedge, alongside the road. The figures collar was turned up, and the bottom, of its coat, fluttered, in the wind. It had remarkable agility."
When the police asked "Was it an animal?" Doctor Rhoades would say "Even I know the difference between an animal, and a man. This person was human."
While Doctor Rhoades conversation, with the police, had been an annoyance, his conversation, with his patient, was no less annoying. Especially when the patient was confronted with facts.
When the patient would ask Doctor Rhoades "Do you expect me to believe this nonsense?" Doctor Rhoades would, only, say "I am only presenting the facts."
When the patient would say "Nonsense. Whoever heard of being descended, from a vampire? I was told you were a trained doctor, not some charlatan, looking for payment."
Doctor Rhoades would, again, explain "I never said you were descended, from a vampire. I said that one of your ancestors was ACCUSED of BEING a vampire."
When the patient would say "What rubbish. Vampires have, never, existed. Even Hollywood movies are based on nothing more than fictional stories."
Realizing that he was getting nowhere, with the patient, Doctor Rhoades would ask "Tell me, has anything happened, to you, in the time, since the visions started?"
When the patient would ask "What do you mean?" Doctor Rhoades would ask "Did anything unusual happen. Did you go someplace, or do something, you dont, normally, do?"
When the patient would say "I am NOT the kind of man who runs off, on "wild gooose chases", if that is what you mean?"
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Have you bought, or received, anything, recently?"
When the patient would say "If you mean things like sacrificial altars, totems, or goats-head masks, the answer is NO. While I TRY not to judge others, I do not have anything to DO with such people."
It was at this point that the mans care-giver would enter the room, and the discussion, informing Doctor Rhoades "All that the man has received is a package."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What KIND of package?" The patient would say "Who knows. Something from a relative I have not seen, or spoken with, for decades."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "May I ask what was in the package?" The care-giver would say "The patient asked me to just place it aside. It has not been opened."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the patient "Why didn't you open the package?" The patient would say "I TOLD you. I haven't seen, or spoken, with them, in YEARS. Why should I care what they sent me?"
Doctor Rhoades would ask "Could it be a peace offering?" The patient would say "I DOUBT that." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "WHY?" The patient would say "Haven't you been listening? I told you. We haven't spoken, in decades."
Doctor Rhoades would say "Yes, you have told me this. What you have not told me is the reason WHY." When the patient would say "I dont want to talk about it." Doctor Rhoades would ask "May **I** see the package?" The patient would tell his care-giver "If the good doctor wants to see the package, GIVE it to him."
When the care-giver woulld say "Very well, sir, if you will follow me."
With that, the doctor would find himself lead to what appeared to be a storage room. While Doctor Rhoades noticed that his guide seemed un-affected, by entering the room, Doctor Rhoades, himself, felt a powerful vision. A vision, of a man, dressed in the Hollywood-style of the vampire.
It was not, however, until the care-giver produced the package, handing it to the doctor, that Johnathan Rhoades had a powerful, and clear, vision, of the distant past.
A vision, of colonial times. A time when, to prove that one was "honest", and "truthful", all that a colonist had to say was "I am a gospel man/woman".
In the vision, the doctor saw a man, being tried, as a servant of evil. When the local judge/minister would ask the accused "Do thy denounce the evil one?" and "Are thy willing to prove that thy is gospel, in the name of the Lord?"
When the victim would, first, ask "How does thee want thyself to prove that thine denounces evil?" When the judge/minister would produce a well-known volume, which was, reportedly, written in German, not English, saying "Thy will prove thy innocence, by reading from this gospel."
When the victim would say "I am aware of the volume thyself handles. I am also aware that the volume is not writ in the language of my homeland. How doth thy expect myself to read, from a foreign tongue?"
All the judge/minister would say was "The accused has failed the first test. On to the second test."
The second test, ofcourse, was the famous trial-by-fire.
The minister/judge would inform the assembly "If this man be innocent of the crimes he be charged, then let the Lord, himself, extinguish the flames, which we are about to light." The minister/judge would, then, add "If this man be in league with evil, let his body be burned, and turned over to the eternal darkness, of Hades."
While Doctor Rhoades watched, the scene was one of pilgrims, stacking wood, as though to build a bon-fire. This, while the accused stood, silent. Changed to the post.
Once the wood was stacked, and doused with something like kerosene, the minister/judge would offer the accused a final chance to escape the fires of damnation. "Admit to thy vampirism, and you shall be spared the fire."
Doctor Rhoades realized that the man thought he saw a way out of being burned to death. What the man did NOT count upon was the radical nature, of colonial Christianity.
When the man admitted to his vampirism, he might have thought his only punishment would be to be banished, from the settlement, for life. (Boy, did he think WRONG)
While the man avoided being burned, alive, what he did not count upon was the sentence, for admitting vampirism.
The sentence, of being tied, with rope, lain in a coffin, then having stake after stake struck into his body, by the executioner.
With his dying breath, and before a stake was driven into his mouth, the man would say "One day, my name will avenge itself upon my murderers! I shall have my revenge! My accusers will PAY!"
It was not until the care-giver shook the doctor, asking "Are you alright, doctor?" That Doctor Rhoades would look about himself, and realize he was back, in the present.
This is when Doctor Rhoades would take the package, and return to the patient, asking "Sir, did you have an ancester, who might have been staked to death?"
The patient would say "Sir, such stories exist in ALL families. That is why everyone has what they call "Skeletons-in-the-closet."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask the patient "Where was your ancester killed, and buried?" The patient would say "I have no idea. I never went in, for such stories."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Did your family happen to keep any records?" The patient would laugh as he said "Of people, being burned at the stake, or being stabbed, and buried?"
This is when the care-giver would suggest "Have you tried our local, historical, society? They have many of our past records." Doctor Rhoades would say "Thank you." then, just before departing, would ask the patient "Sir, just for my records, how long have you lived here."
When the patient would say "Less than a year. WHY?" When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Just wondering. WHY did you come to THIS place?" The patient would say "I really have no idea. I just felt like a change of scenery." When Doctor Rhoades would ask "When did the visions start?" The patient would say "Dont try that stuff, about location, on me. I began having the visions three months before moving here."
Doctor Rhoades would say "Interresting." before departing.
While the director, of the historical society, seemed hesitant, to allow anyone to SEE, let alone touch, historical records, when Doctor Rhoades would inform the director of what information, which the doctor sought, the director would say "So, you want to see the records, from one of the darkest times, of our history."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "WHY is that?" The director would say "I, probably, should not say a word, but our history is not all that pleasant. Nowadays, we are a nice, quiet community. A great place, to raise families. Not so, during the pilgrims time, I am afraid."
Doctor Rhoades, soon, learned why.
IF history was, at all, accurate, it would seem that, during the time, known, "nationally", as the "Salem Witch Hunts", it seems that, for a brief time, the Christians went "insane", executing anyone who was "different". A person could be executed for being ill, or for forgetting which day was sunday.
Anyone, not attending church, as defined by the Holy Scriptures, was declared a servant of evil.
The sheer numbers, of those, murdered, for not being "gospel", left Doctor Rhoades in total dis-belief.
It would seem that stake-burning, stake-driving, and even pressing-to-death, were as common, in colonial times, as prime-time television is, now.
The problem, which Doctor Rhoades ran into was the fact that, in colonial times, those, who were considered "not gospel" had no grave markers. This, colonials believed, would prrevent the dead from rising, and force the dead to travel to Hades.
Even with the aid, and assistance, of the historical society director, it would take Doctor Rhoades three days to find the un-marked grave-yard. The very place where 75% of a Christian colony was buried, after being "convicted" of supernatural crimes.
Doctor Rhoades even found the exact grave when, as he walked over the grave, he "saw" both the ancestor, and the current man, seemingly doing battle.
When Doctor Rhoades brought the patient, and the care-giver, to this location, that the doctor promised "It will, all, be over, soon."
Over the grave, of the patients ancestor, Doctor Rhoades took the trio back in time, to the days, of the witch-hunts. Back, back, further and further, through the veil, of time and space. Over the years, then centuries. Every step of the way, the doctor reminding the two, softly "We are only here to observe. NO harm can come to us. We are safe, in time and space."
While the trio watched the pire being built, then the mans false confession, Doctor Rhoades would shield, and comfort, the care-giver, as the victim was staked in every opening, of his body.
It was not until the patient would ask "What is the meaning, of all of this? My ancestor was no vampire." This is when a forth person would the trio, saying "Such is true, my son."
When the man would say "I am NOT your son. I am from the West." The spirit would say "While that is true, now, there was a time, when your ancesters were part of my own family. A family, which was all but wiped out, in the "madness."
When the patient would ask the spirit "WHY have you appearred, to me? Why not to someone who believes?" The soul would say "I have appearred, many times, across the years, to many, of our relatives. Most insisted that I was either a bad dream, or worse. I have come to you, since I knew you were aware of this doctors work, with the mind."
When Doctor Rhoades would say "I am flattered. But, HOW did you know?" The spirit would say "You think you mortals control ALL of the universes knowledge? Let me tell you, sir. I WATCHED you cure people, of fear of fire, and other ailments."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "Why wait until now, to show yourself?" The spirit would say "While I DID try to contact you, some time ago, I learned that contact is only possible, via relatives. Blood is the most potent connection."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "What is it that you want us to do?" The spirit would say "I only ask that you clear my name, of evil. Wipe that nonsense, of vampirism, from my history."
When Doctor Rhoades would ask "WHY were you accused of vampirism, in the first place?" The spirit would say "A "friend" "convinced" the community that I was seen, dressed as a vampire." Doctor Rhoades would say "In YOUR day, such reports were the closest thing, to actual evidence."
The spirit would say "Once my record is cleared, I can rest in peace." Doctor Rhoades would say "I will do what I can."
With that, the mortals would return, to the present day, and Doctor Rhoades would focus, mentally, on projecting the thought "Across time, and space, let the truth be known. Let the pain, of the past, return to the past. Let the dead rest in peace."
While Doctor Rhoades would have expected nothing more than to feel at peace, in the forgotten grave-yard, what neither he, nor the others, expected, was for the landscape to change, before their very eyes.
As if by Hollywood special effects, the weeds, and undergrowth, would retract, from the graveyard, even as tomb-stones began rising, from the ground.
Soon, a decorative fence would be erected, by invisible hands, and benches would appear.
Somehow, in a way, which even Doctor Johnathan Rhoades had never expected, history had re-written itself.
It was not until the historical society director would join the group, saying "I am sorry I did not greet you, at the gate. I did not see you enter."
When the patient would ask "Whats going on?" The director semed puzzled, as she said "Just people, visiting, and paying tribute, to their ancestors."
In his final notes, on the case, all that Doctor Rhoades could verify was that, in the time, since the "trip", the mans nightmares had ended. The patient was not certain of WHAT his next move would be but he was greatful to be free, of the past.
Doctor Rhoades would write "Full recovery expected, in the coming months."
Even as the doctor was packing, to depart, he could have sworn that, in the middle distance, he saw the figures, of those, who had been slain, in colonial days. The innocents, killed by the un-enlightened.
When the souls noticed that they had the doctors attention, the men gave a deep bow, while the women did a deep curtsey. With that, all dissolved, leaving the doctor smiling, while whispering "Your welcome."
